Recently, we stopped into a little coffee shop we’d never tried before: Addie’s Cup in Gates Mills. It was cozy and unassuming, filled with the soft hum of conversations and the gentle clink of mugs. I ordered something that sounded delicious—but after a few sips, I realized it wasn’t quite right for my taste or dietary goals. I asked if I could try something different, fully prepared to pay for both drinks.

The owner simply smiled and said, “Pick anything you want. It’s on the house.”

She wouldn’t take another payment. And when we tried to leave a tip, she kindly declined.

Redirection, Not Rejection

Soon we learned why. Addie’s Cup doesn’t accept tips—they redirect gratitude instead. After many customers expressed the same wish to give back, the owner placed a jar on the counter. Each week, the donations go to a different charity. Quietly. Without fanfare.

In a world where hustle is rewarded and generosity can feel transactional, this small gesture stopped us in our tracks.
