My Matcha Discovery
More than a decade ago, I discovered matcha at Whole Foods while searching for a coffee alternative that wouldn’t leave me jittery.
Back then, matcha was far from mainstream and easily overlooked among the array of teas and coffees.
oday, matcha has transformed from a simple coffee substitute into a widespread phenomenon.
What Makes Matcha Special
The Camellia sinensis plant’s finely ground leaves are the source of matcha powder. Growing the plant in shaded environments boosts its chlorophyll and amino acid content, resulting in matcha’s vibrant green color. Since matcha uses the entire leaf, it offers higher concentrations of vitamins, fiber, and caffeine than regular green teas.
Compared to coffee, matcha is simpler to prepare, offers a gentle flavor, and has a natural sweetness with a creamy texture. While its caffeine content is slightly lower per cup, matcha contains compounds that slow the absorption and release of caffeine, providing a steady energy boost without the spikes, crashes, or jitters often associated with coffee. Additionally, matcha is rich in theanine, an amino acid known for reducing anxiety and improving focus. It’s no surprise that sipping on matcha leaves you with that calm, Zen-like feeling. For me, there’s no better coffee alternative.
Beauty from Within: Matcha’s Skin-Boosting Benefits
Drinking matcha also comes with possible beauty benefits. It might even help boost your skin’s natural glow! Vitamin C is well-known for its benefits to skin health, especially through topical application. However, studies have also found that the high concentration of vitamin C in matcha tea supports healthy skin growth.
Over a lifetime, the skin faces numerous challenges that affect its structure, function, and appearance. Three things that can accelerate aging are environmental exposure, which can cause discoloration, dryness, and premature wrinkles; chemical exposure from beauty and cleaning products that oxidize, such as hair dyes, soaps, and bleaches; and physical damage, such as cuts or burns. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in protecting against these factors, helping to promote and maintain healthy, radiant skin.
From Niche to Everywhere: The Matcha Boom
Thankfully, matcha is no longer a hidden gem among coffee substitutes—you’d have to be living under a rock to miss it! You can enjoy matcha powder in various forms, such as tea, lattes, smoothies, or as an ingredient in baked goods. The growing demand for healthier foods and beverages, the creativity in new drink options, and its expanding use in desserts have all contributed to its rise in popularity. A strong social media presence and increased awareness of its health and beauty benefits have only fueled its momentum.
It’s everywhere, from iced matcha lattes at major coffee chains like Starbucks to matcha panna cotta at high-end restaurants. Grocery store shelves now stock not just matcha powder but also matcha-flavored ice cream, donuts, muffins, cheesecakes, and even Kit Kat bars. Additionally, matcha has found its way into skincare and supplement products.
The Future Is Green
This trend shows no signs of slowing down. Ongoing research into matcha’s health and beauty benefits, along with new and creative applications, will likely keep its popularity growing. Perhaps that vibrant green color really does bring out a sense of calm and mindfulness in all of us!
